Fundamentals

Every skyscraper starts with a strong foundation.  Lessons will focus on a number of fundamentals including hand technique, rudiments, reading, and timekeeping.  Starting with the proper technique helps form good habits and facilitates executing more advanced concepts.  Reading enables us to step into any musical situation with confidence and share our musical ideas more easily with collaborators.  Timekeeping is the MOST IMPORTANT JOB of the drummer.  Practice with a metronome from the beginning and you'll always be that solid foundation that your bandmates need.

Listening Comprehension

Want to learn to play your favorite song?  Need to figure out what to play based on that demo your guitar player sent?  Interpreting recorded music is essential for musicians, especially in today's musical environment.  Not every band leader is going to have the time or the ability to provide written charts.  You want to be able to pick out which drums you're hearing and translate to your kit.  This also helps with formulating your own musical ideas.  You never know what inspiration may strike from replicating and re-combining the rhythms of your favorite drummers.

FUN

Playing music is supposed to be fun.  Learning the things that seem boring is a means to an end, and what you need to do in order to play exactly what you want to play. Instead of only playing beats out of the lesson book we will work together to apply the fundamentals to the songs and genres you're really interested in. So let's learn to play the drums, and have a great time doing it.
